Classical-Romantic Compositions: A Musical Variation Analysis

Abstract

This study looks into the patterns found in the musical scores of selected composers in the Classical-Romantic period. Random masterpieces were taken from six (6) composers with five (5) musical compositions from each. The image of each musical score was analyzed to obtain its fractal dimension, with the idea of identifying a signature style of music for each composer. Findings revealed that there was consistency with less variance of the fractal dimensions of musical scores for each composer. Furthermore, the minimal disparity of the fractal dimensions across composers, discloses the common influence of Classical-Romantic era where pieces during this period are mostly homophonic, and capitalize on melody and accompaniment.

Jessica M. Avenido, University of San Jose-Recoletos

finished her M.A. in Religious Education at Mother of Life Center, Quezon City, Philippines. Her catechetical training paved the way for her 5-year stint as staff member of the Campus Ministry. Eventually, she engaged herself in full time catechetical instruction in the tertiary level. Among her field of interests are education, religion, curriculum development and values education. Currently, she is an assistant professor in the Center for Religious Education of the University of San Jose-Recoletos, Cebu City, Philippines and handles the formation program of a core group of the children of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW).

Jesse S. Susada, University of San Jose-Recoletos

is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Commerce Major In Computer Science in 2000 from the University of San Jose-Recoletos and finished his Masters Business Administration (MBA) last 2003 from the same school. He is assigned at the Center for Policy, Research, and Development Studies (formerly Research Center) of the same University and teaches Part-time of the College of Commerce. As a staff of the Center, he is the Turnitin in-charge and the same time the ITSO Technical staff.

Efren O. Barabat, University of San Jose-Recoletos

is an Electronics Engineer, graduated from the University of San Jose-Recoletos in 2010, Cum Laude honors. He ranked as top 9 examinee in the April 2011 ECE Licensure Examination. He worked as Field Engineer in SMART Communications, Inc. from 2011 to 2012. Currently, a full-time faculty member of the Electronics Engineering Department of USJ-R College of Engineering, handling Mathematics and Major Subjects of ECE.
